Twitter roared with racist comments such as, “this is America. Instead of appreciating the great diversity of our country, some people viewed it as “unamerican” because she was not a white individual. Negative backlash arose because she was the first Indian American to win the nation-wide competition. This new crowning drew a lot of attention – both negative and positive. In 2014 Nina Davuluri was the winner of the 2014 Miss America Pagent.

One way it is not commonly recognized however is the prejudice that one can assume their lifestyle is, or even their party-allignment/voting habits. Although it does not explicitly look like “typical slavery and Jim Crow laws” (111), it can be evident through blatant and less explicit comments of prejudices of those of color. David Cisneros and Thomas Nakayma bring up this new racial oppression in their academic journal titled, “New Media, Old Racisms: Twitter, Miss America, and Cultural Logics of Race”. In fact, it continues to exist in a new form today. I believe that we all can agree that unfortunately, racism has existed in America.
